Joe's Musings: 10 Relationship Truths To Keep In Mind

In minor ways we differ, in major ways we are the same.? We are more alike than we are different which is why we are able to encounter personalities compatible with ourselves.? Here are ten truths worth remembering as you meet new people and continue to nourish current relationships. ?

1. When the going gets tough, some people will leave you.? It?s a classic instance of addition by subtraction: distancing yourself from negative, shallow relationships will introduce happiness into your life.? Life is far too short to spend time with those who make you unhappy and miserable.? If someone can?t be there for you all of the time, especially when you need them most, then they are not worth your time.? The best friends encourage you to be your best, but love and accept you at your worst. ? ? ? ?

2. Recognize and accept that we all change drastically over time.? We are constantly in a dynamic state of flux as our minds are persistently exposed to new information, ideas, and beliefs.? It is more realistic to be lenient with your expectations of other people rather than set an unattainable standard of perfection.? ? ?

3. Forgiveness is a sign of strength.? As imperfect human beings, we are all flawed and prone to making mistakes.? If a friend has the courage to sincerely apologize, find it in your heart to let bygones be bygones.? When you forgive, you do not change the past, but you certainly change the future.? ? ? ?

4. Romantic relationships have friendship as a foundation.? When it comes to romantic relationships, remaining faithful must be a priority.? Once the initial excitement wanes, who are you left with?? Do you really like the person for who they are, or is what you have merely a physical attraction?? The intellectual, emotional, and spiritual connections you make with your significant other will strengthen the fabric of your relationship more than physical contact. ? ? ?

5. True friends stand by your side when times are tough.? They listen and offer positive reinforcement, but are not afraid to tell you the truth even if it hurts.? They make space in their schedule for you, always providing comfort and emotional support.? You should not have to fight for a spot in someone?s life. ? ? ?

6. Small gestures go a long way.? We often times underestimate the power of a simple act of caring.? A smile, a genuine compliment, or a willingness to help have the potential to turn a life around.? If your friend performed well on an exam, send him or her a congratulatory text message.? In instances where your friends experience failure, honest words of encouragement might be the exactly what they need to get back on the horse. ?

7. Successful relationships require hard work.? They are not self-sustaining manufacturers of joy and happiness.? Growth results when two friends face and overcome problems together.? Don?t try to be everything to everyone.? Invest the time so you can be everything to someone. ? ?

8. Choose your relationships wisely.? It is better be alone than to be in bad company.? Be appreciative of the friends you have.? They will not be around forever, and neither will you.? True friendship requires you to shove your ego in the backseat. ?

9. There is a purpose for everyone you meet.? No relationship is a waste of time.? The wrong ones will teach you the lessons you need to thrive in the right ones. ?

10. Loyalty trumps correctness.? In a situation where your friend is wrong, always back them up in public.? Wait for the appropriate moment to point out the error in their thinking in private. ?

Above all else, when it comes to relationships, etch the following principles in your mind forever.

-Honesty is the best policy.

-Actions speak louder than words.

-Find ways to bring out the best in other people.
