Increasing business productivity

Posted by:?Hitesh?|

August 30, 2012

Acquiring?the most with minimal resources is not that difficult. You could achieve more without pushing-in your resources, even in constrained market scenarios. Since, the motto is to increase productivity, effective measures should be implemented by the staff.

?

As a business person, you?definitely?would like to see your business grow, but surely not at the cost of your health. Spending too much at your workplace in terms of time, would only fetch unfavorable results for the business. Giving it more than what it actually requires is not recommended. Instead, you may try following these steps to make it a wise deal:

?

1. Set your priorities straight ? Business needs time to grow, but it is not the sole reason for its success. Going by Pareto principle, you get 80% value out of 20% of the work. Hence, finding the key objective(s) that drive value to your business is more fruitful.
For example ? If you aim to target a specific audience, there?s no point spending a penny over others that hold little or no relevance.

2. Set goals to achieve ? Work becomes more exciting if goals are set and achieved. Goals tend to motivate individuals towards work. Any organization should have its employees jot down a few goals or objectives every week to empower work. Doing this would let them find their objectives to be achieved in a given time. The motive is to maintain focus throughout the week to get results.

3. Outsource ? Work that is not core to a business should be outsourced. Several organziations across the world take care of the work assigned and do it efficiently. Moreover, they do it at lower costs. Deciding otherwise could well be a huge waste of time and resoources. A manager must believe that the time not spent on important activities is the time lost.

?

Conclusion-
Businesses often strive to excel and achieve more with the least possible resources. Efficiency can be acquired by going after the set priorities and getting the desired result. Outsourcing comes into picture when managers decide to hand over a non-core work to outside companies.

Of course,?businesses?can collide with success somewhere in the middle of the path. The path may seem simple; to uphold it is difficult.

Two-quarterback systems have rarely worked, but the Jets plan to test that theory with Sanchez and Tebow this season. (AP Photo/David Kohl, File)

(AP) ? It'll be Tebow Time for the New York Jets if Mark Sanchez goes down with an injury.

Coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday that Tim Tebow would be the starting quarterback this season if Sanchez was sidelined for any significant amount of time instead of turning to a more conventional-style signal caller such as third-stringer Greg McElroy ? which some fans and media have speculated might be the case.

"I think Tebow would expand his role," Ryan said. "We feel good about what Tim can do."

Tebow is listed as the No. 2 quarterback, so it would seem obvious that he would be the guy to fill in. But the fact the Jets plan to use Tebow in specific packages raised some questions over whether he would remain in that role if Sanchez were hurt.

"We don't speculate what the situation is," McElroy said. "Obviously, Tim's a fantastic player and I think he would do a great job in that role, but we don't want to worry about a situation like that. Mark is our starter and we're going to follow him the best way we know how, and that's really what we're going to focus on.

"If something were to happen down the road, God forbid, we'll figure it out then."

While Ryan didn't specifically address what the game plan would be, it would appear that the Jets would change up their offense a bit to play into Tebow's strengths ? as Denver did last season when he took over for Kyle Orton ? rather than have him play in New York's normal offense that's set up for Sanchez.

Neither Sanchez nor Tebow will play in the team's preseason finale Thursday night at Philadelphia, but McElroy is expected to take the bulk of the snaps with fourth-stringer Matt Simms also seeing some action. McElroy, a seventh-round pick out of Alabama last year, has seen limited action in the preseason as Sanchez and Tebow have gotten most of the playing time.

He went 4 of 6 for 49 yards in the exhibition opener against Cincinnati, which was his first game action since dislocating his right thumb while playing against Philadelphia last preseason.

"It's been a while since I've been out there for an extended amount of time, so I'm excited," McElroy said.

Ryan has been impressed by McElroy's development since this time a year ago.

"I think he has shown a stronger arm," Ryan said. "Clearly, we always knew he's a smart guy. I think he has a good grasp of our system."

And, McElroy will be in charge of an offense on Thursday that has failed to get into the end zone all preseason. The Jets have gone three preseason games without a touchdown, matching the 1977 Atlanta Falcons for offensive ineptitude.

So, if McElroy gets the Jets in on his first drive, might there be a bit of a quarterback controversy, after all ? or at least a chance to give Sanchez and Tebow a little grief?

"Not at all," McElroy said, laughing. "This is a team effort. ... If we can score some points, we're obviously going to try to do that."

___

NOTES: Newly acquired RT Jason Smith practiced with the Jets for the first time after being traded from the Rams for Wayne Hunter. Ryan said Smith ? at 6-foot-5 and 305 pounds ? is "five years younger and a little more athletic" than the 31-year-old Hunter, who is 6-5 and 318. Smith, the No. 2 overall pick in 2009, will be the backup to Austin Howard at right tackle and appreciates having a chance at a fresh start with the Jets. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," Smith said of the change of scenery, "and someone thought I was beautiful." Smith will likely play about 10 snaps Thursday night. ... Ryan said FB John Conner will play some against the Eagles "because quite honestly, we haven't used the fullback." Rookie DL Quinton Coples will also see action, but WR Stephen Hill, the team's second-round pick, might not because he "has had so many reps."

Elon Law Announces Elder Law Clinic | Senior Friendly Guilford

Elon University School of Law recently announced plans to open an Elder Law Clinic that will begin serving clients in the school?s fall 2012 semester. Law students participating in the Elder Law Clinic will provide free legal counsel and services, under the supervision of law faculty, to low- and moderate-income residents of Guilford County, ages 60 and above.

?The clinic will meet a significant need among low-income elderly residents in our region, while providing law students with important experience in the practice of law,? said George R. Johnson, Jr., dean and professor of law at Elon University School of Law.

The clinic will focus on civil legal issues, such as power of attorney, end of life planning, contract and consumer issues, housing, grandparent rights, Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security benefits, and Veterans benefits.

?The clinic will provide excellent educational opportunities for our law students by exposing them to a broad range of law and client circumstances,? said Associate Professor of Law Margaret Kantlehner, who will direct the clinic.

The Elder Law Clinic will serve those with a monthly household income of $1,700 or less, if single, and $2,200 or less, if married. In Guilford County, low-income elders unable to afford private legal representation are served by the Legal Aid of North Carolina-Greensboro Office, which serves a six county area. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that one in five Guilford County residents will be over age 60 by the year 2030. The Elder Law Clinic at Elon Law will help to meet a growing need for legal services within this demographic.
The Elder Law Clinic will begin considering new cases on August 15, 2012.

Beginning August 15, please contact Clinic Practitioner-in-Residence, Hannah Vaughan, at (336) 279-9314 or elderlaw@elon.edu for more information.

Elon Law students also serve clients free of charge, under the supervision of faculty, through the law school?s Humanitarian Immigration Law Clinic and Wills Drafting Clinic. Students have additional opportunities to engage in experiential learning through the law school?s leadership program and externship program, which recently expanded through a partnership with The Washington Center to offer full-semester and summer legal externship opportunities in Washington, D.C.

Dwarf pair pump out gravity waves

Researchers have spotted visible-light evidence for one of astronomy's most elusive targets - gravity waves - in the orbit of a pair of dead stars.

Until now, these ripples in space-time, first predicted by Einstein, have only been inferred from radio-wave sources.

But a change in the orbits of two white dwarf stars orbiting one another 3,000 light-years away is further proof of the waves that can literally be seen.

A study to be reported in Astrophysical Journal Letters describes the pair.

Gravitational waves were a significant part of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which viewed space itself as a malleable construct, and the gravity of massive objects as a force that could effectively warp it.

Catching sight of an actual gravity wave, however, is a tricky business; their effects are far too small to be measured with Earth-bound experiments.

But the wider Universe provides a laboratory in which the indirect effects of gravity waves can be measured.

Six-second switch

In principle, any two massive objects orbiting one another can emit gravitational waves, slowly losing the momentum of their orbits into the waves.

The effect is to slightly change the size of the orbits, and the time it takes to complete them.

A measurement of a minuscule change in the orbits of rapidly rotating neutron stars called pulsars garnered the 1993 Nobel Prize in physics.

But pulling off the same trick with visible light has until now eluded researchers.

It is the extreme nature of the pair of white dwarf stars known as J0651 - each a substantial fraction of our Sun's mass orbiting each other at a distance just a third that between the Earth and Moon - that increases the magnitude of the gravity waves.

As members of the same team reported in Astrophysical Journal in 2011, the pair orbit each other in less than 13 minutes.

Since that discovery, the team has been keenly watching the pair "eclipse" one another, with each briefly blocking out the other's light as seen from Earth.

Over a period of 13 months, the team saw the orbital period reduce by less than a thousandth of a second, but the effect also shifts when the eclipse time is expected to happen, and that has shifted back by some six seconds since the pair were discovered.

"A lot of these indirect measurements have taken people years, mostly because the orbits are so much longer," explained lead author of the study, JJ Hermes from the University of Texas at Austin.

Mr Hermes told BBC News that he liked the idea that such a groundbreaking result was established in part by using a telescope nearly as old as Einstein's theory: the Otto Struve 2.1m telescope at the McDonald Observatory in Texas.

"There have been 30 years of using radio telescopes and timing pulsars, but this is the first time we've been able to detect the influence of gravitational wave radiation using an optical telescope," he told BBC News.

The team will continue to watch the pair's tightening orbit, and the expected eclipse time should shift back by another 20 seconds by next May. The results will also help guide observations from "direct detection" experiments.

These, such as the proposed eLisa project, aim to measure the tiny relative movements of vastly separated detectors as gravitational waves pass - a final, irrefutable proof that the waves are what relativity predicted so long ago.

"It would be a really nice confirmation if we got one of these laser interferometer missions going - we'd know exactly what to look for," Mr Hermes said.

"We've crunched the numbers, and eLisa would be able to detect this thing in about a week."

Read more - THE LEGEND OF THE GREAT HORSE trilogy

August 28th, 2012 ? Horses in the Early 20th Century, Notes on History, Writing

Horse pulling Plow (1939) USAEven devout horse-lovers may not appreciate how much horsemanship has transformed in the past century. After thousands of years, our relationship to horses and new-found concern for their welfare is a revolution from practices of only a few decades past.

The 20th Century saw broad fundamental change to society ? as it always has, horsemanship holds a mirror to cultural upheaval and growth.

The Horsemanship Century ? a complete transformation

Over the past century, the world has undergone a massive change from using the horse in war, transportation and farm work ? to sports, recreation and therapy.

A hundred years ago in 1912, early ?High Wheeler? automobiles were being replaced by the Ford?s Model T, or the ?Tin Lizzie.? In 1912 tractors were being introduced to American farms; and, though the horse and mule population continued to increase for another 6 years to reach some 26.4 million animals in 1918 ? 30 years later horses had almost vanished from the farm.

This steep, rapid decline brought the idea that horses are ?obsolete? ? the horse-and-buggy has become a metaphor of old-fashioned ways ?dying out.? Yet an amazing thing happened that changed the picture of the horsemanship?s anticipated decline: recreation and sport. In the 1800?s jumping was discovered to be an exciting and humane challenge: modern equestrian sports ignited ancient passions for riding and created a new world of horsemanship experience. Even now frontiers in healing horsemanship are opening, providing therapy and rehabilitation for a range of human disabilities.

There are an estimated 9,500,000 horses in the US today, but the horse population is no longer farm animals and cavalry: the demographic has been completely transformed. Our increased focus on equine welfare?almost unseen in earlier human society?is a hallmark of our new ways of horsemanship. The horse helped build civilization, and, amazingly, our modern partnership has risen to new levels with potential to continue into an even brighter future.

San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Helping Those with Severed ...

When accidents occur, there are a number of different ways in which people can suffer as a result. One of the most difficult injuries to overcome is a severed limb, as this will immediately change a person?s life permanently. Unfortunately, many people lose limbs because of the negligent or reckless actions of others, and when this situation arises people in this position are often unaware of where to turn for help. Fortunately, there are laws in place in California that are designed to protect those who have been harmed in this manner so that they can start anew upon a solid foundation.

Below you will find a brief overview of the issues that relate to the loss of limbs. This information will include descriptions of the types of steps that can be taken in order to overcome this loss as much as possible as well as a description of damages that can be recovered after this type of an incident occurs. Anyone who faces this challenge needs to obtain the help of experienced San Diego personal injury lawyers as soon as possible.

Severed Limbs ? How They Are Treated

When someone severs a limb, that injured person faces an immediate medical emergency. The wound where the limb was severed needs to be closed quickly so that the injured person does not bleed to death. If this step is taken successfully, corrective surgery will generally be performed to minimize the pain that the injured person will have to endure. From there, some people will likely choose to have a prosthetic attached where the limb once was, and they will then have to learn to use this prosthetic limb so that they can regain the ability to perform basic tasks.

Unfortunately, prosthetic limbs are extremely expensive, particularly if they are recent models that are the result of remarkable technological advancements. Few people can afford them even if they have health insurance, and many people are forced to make difficult choices as a result. However, those who have lost a limb because of the actions of someone else may have legal options that will help them fund this choice.

How San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Can Help

When someone loses a limb because of the faulty actions of someone else, that person may have rights that include the filing of a California personal injury lawsuit. If such a lawsuit is filed and it?s successful, the plaintiff could recover damages that compensate for these ongoing medical costs, for any lost income, for pain and suffering and for other forms of loss depending on the circumstances of the situation that led to the filing of the claim.

If you or someone you love has lost a limb in an accident, you need to seek the help of San Diego personal injury lawyers who have been fighting for the rights of clients for many years. Contact the Mitchell | Gilleon Law Firm today to schedule a free initial consultation.

Mortgage delinquencies improve dramatically in July | HomeFinder ...

American borrowers continued to improve the U.S. mortgage crisis in July, as delinquency rates dropped, according to Equifax.

The credit reporting agency's National Consumer Credit Trends Report showed delinquency rates on first mortgages 30 days or more late dropped 15 percent from last July, while first mortgage severe derogatory balances fell 17 percent.

"The decline in mortgage debt is due to loans converting to real estate owned at the end of the foreclosure process, homeowners paying down debt faster through cash-in refinancing, or shortening of the mortgage term as well as borrowers curtailing the debt by adding a bit extra to their payment each month," said Amy Crews Cutts, Equifax chief economist.

Borrowers also improved on auto loan, credit card, consumer finance and home equity payments. However, student loan delinquency rates increased 14 percent from last July.

Student loan debt is expected to have a croppling effect on young Americans' ability to buy homes, according to a report from the Young Invincibles. The analysis said that about half of their income would be spent on mortgage, student loan, credit card and car payments, which would make them unqualified for most home loans.?

Q&A: Will I ever love him? | Relationships

Question by : Will I ever love him?
I am an 18 year old female. In eighth grade I introduced myself to my best friend?s cousin. He lives, and always have lived, 2 hours away from me. We talked on myspace until the fall of my sophomore year in highschool, where my mom brought me to his house to meet him, and his family, in person. The night i met him, we went on our first date to his homecoming. He also went to mine, shortly after. And, also, he was my surprise at my 16th surprise birthday party. But, the night of my homecoming he asked me to be his girlfriend and, even though I really really like the boy, I was scared to say yes because he told me he loved me. I wasn?t ready to hear the L word at sixteen. Ive never had an official relationship. I?ve never been in love. We ended up staying ?just friends? for years, after that! Which seemed good for me until, a year ago, he tried to move on. He dated a girl for almost a whole year. I kept my mouth shut, but deep down, i was sad and jealous of his new relationship because i used to have feelings for him and felt like they were coming back. Ever since we?ve be we?ve referred to each other as ?best friends? even though, five years later, he claims, and I KNOW and believe him that to him, i?m not just a best friend. To him, im the love of his life. He realized his love for me after trying to move on with another girl. He is head over heels in love and claims that he won?t stop loving me until I?m walking down the aisle with another man. This past june was my highschool graduation party. He is a DJ so i asked him to DJ the party. When he came to the party we reconnected. My friends and family said how obvious it was that he like me because ?he couldnt take his eyes off me the whole night?. We ended up hanging out often this summer. His girlfriend (who was always arguing with him) for month and month broke up with him and HE was the one who had to chase her back to ?fix things.? But this summer, she broke up with him yet again, and, this time, he had it. He didn?t chase her back even though ten mins later his girl went chasing him back. But, he chose me. They ended thing on a good note, thankfully, and agreed to stay friends. Now, MY DILEMMA. I am dating my best friend of five years :) Lol it seems funny to actually say that. But, I CANT commit to him. We have almost everything in common. He seems to be the perfect guy. He doesnt smoke, drink, do drugs, doesnt fight, he adores me, treats me right, calls me every night, etc etc. He is so good to me, but, for some reason i dont feel like im ?In love? with him. Ive never told him i love him. But i love him in a caring way. We have been in a ?secret relationship? these past few months, although, all of my family and friends call him my boyfriend, and he is not. MY DILEMMA IS THAT I DONT WANT MY FIRST BOYFRIEND TO BE A LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP. I DONT WANT TO COMMIT TO HIM BECAUSE, IF I DO, I AM PRETTY MUCH COMMITTING TO MARRIAGE BECAUSE HE WANTS TO MARRY ME AND HAVE CHILDREN WITH ME. This ?relationship? with him these past few months have been great but sometimes i feel that i miss him when he is away but, when im with him, he feels like a great friend (that i kiss and hold hands with?) We spend nights together. We arent sexually active but we do sleep in the same bed during our sleepovers. I really wish i could commit to him and call him my boyfriend but at the same time i want to keep my options open. We have our whole lives ahead of us. I believe that i will never find love, to him, or to anyone, if i dont date other people. Although, the sucky part about even CONSIDERINGG to JUST stay friends scares me. I couldnt imagine my life without talking to him everyday. Ugh. Will I ever love him the way he loves me? Im thinking about going to counseling. But, id love to hear others opinions because i love yahoo answers lol. Any insight could help. Thanks.

Israeli Soldiers Show No Mercy to Palestinian Children ? Global ...

Global Geopolitics & Political Economy / IPS

Pierre Klochendler

JERUSALEM, Aug 26 (IPS) ? In a hamlet of the occupied West Bank, the testimony goes, Israeli troops chase a Palestinian child. ?He was about two metres away ? the company commander cocked his weapon in his face? The kid fell on the ground, crying and begging for his life.? ?It was this kind of gray situation, not that terrible,? the Israeli sergeant?s report continues. ?Because those kids really do throw stones and that?s risky ? it?s not like we actually meant to harm them. I suppose it?s a very scarring experience for them, but the situation is complicated.?

The year is 2007. The sergeant?s account is one of 47 testimonies collected from over 30 Israeli soldiers who served in the occupied Palestinian territories in 2005-2011.

Entitled ?Children and Youth ? Soldiers? Testimonies 2005-2011?, a 71-page booklet has just been released for distribution by the group ?Breaking the Silence?.

The NGO founded in 2004 by Israeli veterans of the Second Palestinian Intifadah uprising (2000-2005) is dedicated to documenting daily life under military rule in the Palestinian Territories through soldiers? experiences during their routine round of duty.

In order to sensitise Israeli 12-graders who, next year, will be drafted in the army, the NGO plans to distribute copies of the report at the gates of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv high schools. The school year started last Monday.

?Israeli children enjoy the protection of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Israel is signatory, whereas Palestinian children grow up without protection,? says the brochure?s preface.

?That specific kid, who actually lay there on the ground, begging for his life, was actually nine years old,? the sergeant notes in his testimony. ?I think of our nine-year-old kids (?) ? a kid has to beg for his life? A loaded gun is pointed at him and he has to plead for mercy?

?But if we hadn?t entered the village, then stones would be thrown the next day and perhaps someone would be wounded or killed.?

?Stone-throwing ceased?? asks the NGO interviewer.

?No,? is the laconic admission.

The events described in the booklet took place as a calm security situation prevailed, after the Intifadah subsided. Yet, the testimonies show that racism, abuse, violence, wounding and killing by targeted shooting, even if ?unintentional?, of Palestinian children and teenagers continues unabated.

The NGO grappled with the decision to expose Israeli pupils to the reality depicted so graphically in the report, acknowledges Avner Gvaryahu, a former soldier now turned activist, whose statement appears anonymously in the report. ?Yet if you?re old enough to enlist and carry a weapon, you?re old enough to know what?s really happening in the territories.?

And, Palestinian children are old enough, so it seems, to be arrested at gunpoint, harassed and humiliated, beaten ?to a pulp?, used as ?human shields? against other Palestinians ? this, despite an Israeli Supreme Court ruling from 2002.

?At first, you point your gun at some five-year-old kid, and feel bad ? saying, it?s not right,? another soldier testifies. "But that changes when you go into the village and they throw stones at you.?

During another incident mentioned in the report, a company commander catches a 12-year-old boy, forces him to get down on his knees, yells threats at him ?like a madman? in order to intimidate other youth who?d threw stones at the troops.

"The kid cried, peed his pants. (?) It was like something out of a Vietnam movie," recounts the soldier. ?I knew it was just a hollow threat ? the guy?s an officer, after all, and I don?t think an officer would do anything, but??

Eventually, a village elder persuaded the commander to free the boy. The next day, two Molotov cocktails were hurled at vehicles driving nearby.

"So we didn?t really do our job," the soldier concludes his testimony. "And you wonder what that job really is.?

Most Israeli youth are educated in a system ? be it family or school ? that, although praising its intrinsic moral values, seldom questions the army?s operational routine and the moral toll it exerts on its soldiers.

National security is usually paramount. Schools extol patriotism, courage, sacrifice. NGO activists insist that moral questioning could prepare future conscripts to fight against indifference and cruelty displayed by fellow soldiers.

The army has said this report is one-sided, arguing that the NGO failed to submit to it its material, thus rendering a military probe into cases of human rights infringement, not to say crimes, impossible.

"The organisation?s refusal to turn to the authorities indicates its true motives ? to generate negative publicity for the Israeli army and its soldiers," a military spokesperson stated.

Activists refute the incitement charge, stressing that they support army service but, at the same time, share the conviction that students must be informed ahead of military service.

Since its creation, ?Breaking the Silence? has collected testimonies from more than 800 soldiers. "We?re a society that nurtures family and educational values, but the army treats Palestinian children differently," says executive director Dana Golan. "Each testimony features stories about the maltreatment of children; each such story is a kick in the gut."

Golan is aware that some teens will ignore the brochure, but were they to read just one story, the NGO?s goal would be served.

?The main purpose of ?Breaking the Silence? is to arouse public discussion of the moral price that Israeli society pays for a reality in which young soldiers face a civilian population and dominate it on a daily basis,? states the report?s foreword.

But moral debates are aplenty within Israeli society. Just ten days ago in downtown Jerusalem, three Palestinian teenagers were almost lynched by a crowd of 13- to 19-year-old Israelis. The incident unleashed much breast-beating and condemnation.

Yet, no one entertains the illusion that such collective mea-culpa will end the abuses of the occupation. After all, most Israelis are still convinced that they hold the moral high ground vis-?-vis their Palestinian neighbours even though, to paraphrase the saying, their good intentions pave the road to hell, not to future peace.

More on the debunked Egyptian 'crucifixion' hoax (and its 2009 ...

Earlier this week, I debunked the story ? spreading like wildfire on WorldNetDaily and other Internet sites ? that Christians were being crucified by the Muslim Brotherhood in front of Egypt?s presidential palace. As I noted, the story was based on nothing more than a social-media rumor that had been posted for a few minutes on the Web site of Sky News Arabic, before an alert Sky editor deleted it. From that small seed of nonsense, it traveled far and wide, as such urban legends do in the Internet age.

In response to my debunking, WorldNetDaily published a new article purporting to ?confirm? the original crucifixion story. But the only relevant new evidence WND provides is a link to a video that purports to show the deleted text from the Sky web site. Since I already reported the existence of the original, short-lived Sky article, I?m not sure what this is supposed to prove. (More generally, the article also supplies links to Arabic-media images of people who have been brutalized ? allegedly at the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood. I have no reason to doubt that these photos are genuine. But as I made abundantly clear in my original article, I don?t dispute that Egypt?s hardcore Islamists are a nasty lot. My article was limited to debunking the crucifixion claim. And none of the photos provided show any hint of crucifixion.)

Over the last day or so, I have had an ongoing email correspondence with Michael Carl, the WND reporter who wrote the crucifixion article. He tells me he is sticking by his story. When I asked him if he has ?any information from any of the tens of thousands of people who would have seen an actual ?crucifixion? if one really did take place in front of the presidential palace,? he told me that he had. Tantalized, I pressed him for details. Alas, he refused to divulge any of the evidence to me ? or anyone else. If he did, he explained, the Muslim Brotherhood ?would kill my sources.? And so ended our correspondence.

More enlightening than my emails with Father Carl (he describes himself as a priest, as well as a reporter), was a note I got from a reader pointing out that this is not the first time that Islamists in the region have been falsely accused of crucifixions.

As Nathan J. Brown pointed out in early 2009, on the web site of the Carnegie Endowment, an internet rumor circulated in late 2008 to the effect that Hamas was ?celebrating? Christmas by crucifying Gaza?s non-Muslims. And amazingly, it wasn?t just the conspiracy theorists at WND who got sucked into this one. According to Brown, it was featured in blogs connected to such respectable publications as The New Republic, National Review and Commentary. Even the Simon Wiesenthal Center was pushing the story.

Here is the real story, as Brown describes it:

Some officials of the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Justice (answering to Hamas) have been drafting a new criminal code based on Islamic criminal law. They have not released its work (at least outside of Gaza), but they did hold a workshop to discuss a draft. A copy of this document fell into the hands of a reporter for the Arabic daily al-Hayat. While that newspaper is generally reliable enough, the reporter made a significant mistake: He thought the draft had been fully and finally passed by the parliament, not that it was the subject of a small group discussion. And he quoted from some passages in the law ? including the title of a section dealing with categories of punishment that mentioned crucifixion (a legal category in Islamic criminal law). There was no evidence that the law went beyond using the term as a legal category. And since the reporter did quote some fairly strong provisions in other areas it seems unlikely that he would have missed the opportunity to mention any actual provisions for crucifixion. The small (and mistaken) article in al-Hayat was picked up by the Jerusalem Post (it also circulated in some Arabic media outlets) which ? in perhaps the only glimmer of responsible journalism in this strange episode ? added that it could not confirm the report. But that qualification got lost. So did the explanation from Hamas legal officials that no law had been passed. One Israeli activist working hard to circulate the charge (Itamar Marcus) actually went so far as to cover up his mistake by claiming that the Hamas denial (which was actually quite accurate) was simply a ?lie? ? And so columnists (generally on the right side of the political spectrum) began to claim that Hamas had legislated crucifixion ? in the more lurid report ? for any ?unbelievers,? ?enemies of Islam,? or even Christians. And few could resist mentioning that the timing coincided with Christmas.

The people reporting this false story were not deliberately lying. As I noted in my original post, they have simply become so wrapped up in the idea that we are fighting an existential war against militant Islam, that they are willing to believe any nonsense story they come across without checking it. If it sounds like it could be true, then it must be.

The first casualty of war, as always, is truth.

Livestrong donations skyrocket after Armstrong?s decision

Armstrong at the Tour de France in 2010 (AP)

Last week, after iconic American cyclist Lance Armstrong said he would no longer fight the charges brought against him by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, many wondered if Livestrong--the foundation for cancer survivors founded by the seven-time Tour de France winner and testicular cancer survivor--would suffer as a result.

It doesn't look like it.

On Friday, Armstrong said that donations to Livestrong were up 25 times over the day before. "Thank you thank you thank you!" he wrote on Twitter.

Doug Ulman, Livestrong's chief executive, told ESPN that the foundation had received $78,000 in unsolicited donations in the 24 hours following the announcement of Armstrong's decision. Compare that to Thursday, when Livestrong received just $3,200.

"It's been really tricky for the organization to be able to deal with all of these challenges to Lance's image," Stacey Palmer, editor of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, told NPR, "but one of the things that's so interesting is that they've managed to increase their fundraising and demonstrate that they're much beyond what his role is."

Ulman said Livestrong has seen a 13 percent increase in contributions in the last 12 months.

[Slideshow: Armstrong banned for life]

As a result of the doping charges, Armstrong has been stripped of his seven Tour titles and been banned for life from professional cycling. He is, however, still competing in bike races. On Saturday, Armstrong finished second in a 36-mile mountain bike race in Aspen, Colo., where he made his first public comments since being hit with the lifetime ban.

"Nobody needs to cry for me," Armstrong told reporters. "I'm going to be great.

"It's not so much about racing anymore," he continued. "For me, it's more about staying fit and coming out here and enjoying one of the most beautiful parts of the world, on a beautiful day, on a very hard course."

Since Armstrong launched Livestrong in 1997, the foundation has raised close to $500 million.

"Drugs or no drugs," Matthew Serge wrote on Twitter, "anyone that raises $500 million to fight cancer is cool by me."

"I'm focused on the future," Armstrong said after the Colorado race. "I've got five great kids, a great lady in my life, a wonderful foundation that's completely unaffected by any noise out there, and we're going to continue to do our job. The people like the people who are standing around here or on the course, they voiced their opinion in the last 48 hours and are going to support us."

Jeremy Swanson, a photographer who shot Armstong in Aspen, tweeted: "#StillMyHero."

The winner of Saturday's race, 16-year-old Keegan Swirbul, added: "I'm so psyched right now--to beat the seven-time Tour champ."

Pictures of Sony?s Xperia J smartphone leak

Some pictures of Sony?s (SNY) Xperia J mid-range smartphone have started to trickle out on Taiwanese site ePrice?and so far the new Xperia device looks pretty similar to the Sony Xperia smartphones we?ve seen in the past. The key difference is that the Xperia J seems to have more curved edges around its outer frame, making it somewhat more stylish than previous models that were simply flat slabs. In terms of specs, the Xperia J is actually a bit weaker than the Xperia ion Sony released earlier this year as it features a?4-inch FWVGA display, a 1GHz single-core processor, a 5-megapixel camera and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. If nothing else, the Xperia J shouldn?t sell for more than $99 if it?s ever released in the United States.
