Technology in the classroom: How much is enough? | MNN - Mother ...

Where is the future of education headed? Our kids are connected to gadgets and plugged into technology at earlier and earlier ages to the point where many find their use inevitable and even critical to a child's education. But interestingly, a strange trend has emerged amongst those tasked with creating all of this technology. They're sending their kids to schools that don't use any gadgets ? no iPads, no computers ? no screens of any kind. And they're keeping their kids away from gadgets at home, too. Do these parents know something about technology that the rest of us should know too?

?

The story first emerged a few months ago, in this New York Times piece about the latest trend among parents working in Silicon Valley ? the hub of technology and home of techie giants such as?Google, Apple, Yahoo and Hewlett-Packard. ?These parents are sending their kids to schools that follow the Waldorf style of teaching. Waldorf schools rely on simple tools: pencils, knitting needles, or even mud rather than video games, apps, and ereaders to teach modern school lessons. In fact, the Waldorf philosophy says that computers inhibit creative thinking, movement, human interaction and attention spans. According to the Times article, many Silicon Valley execs agree, claiming there is a time and a place for technology and that the school years are just not the right time.

?

Jane Quadri, a Waldorf-trained teacher who taught my eldest in a neighborhood co-op pre-K program had this to say about technology in the classroom: "I think early childhood is the most important time for learning and establishing how we relate to the world. Exploring the real world, interacting with people and nature is how we learn about ourselves and develop?character. I really don't think technology is a necessary part of this process and can be detrimental to it. I also think having a relationship with a teacher is essential to the learning process. I do believe there are creative ways to use technology ? but given the sad state of public education, I doubt many schools will be able to provide innovative and forward-thinking tech programs."

?

So is technology a benefit or a detriment to the classroom?

?

I posed this question during a weekly twitter chat I host each week with members of the Green Moms Carnival. ?

?

Abbie of Farmer's Daughter (@farmdaughter),?a high school science teacher specializing in environmental science, botany, biology, and physics is a big proponent of technology in the classroom, using it for everything from a class website to link to articles and assign readings to a laptop and smart board so that the students can plot local contamination sites. She also allows her students to use iPads and laptops for taking notes, but she walks around frequently to make sure that's what's actually happening. ?Abbie sees this generation of students as "technology natives," who have never known life without these gadgets and commented that she "would love to find a way to incorporate all those tiny computers in (almost) everyone's pockets to use for GOOD in my class!"

?

Abbie was not alone in embracing technology. ?In fact, most of the Twitter chat participants thought technology in the classroom is a good thing, as long as it's used to teach and not just to keep kids busy. ?Karen Hanrahan of Best of Mother Earth (@karenhanrahan) felt that technology helped keep her kids stay engaged in the classroom and even negotiated with teachers for her son to do more with computers (building websites) to keep him from getting bored. ?And Lisa Sharp of Retro Housewife Goes Green (@retrohousewife5) was homeschooled but relied heavily on computers because her dyslexia made it easier to type her lessons than write them.

?

Lisa's husband, Justin Sharp, a 5th grade teacher from Oklahoma, also chimed in "The key is that students should be learning with technology not from it.? If activities are designed well students can learn with a greater depth of knowledge than a traditional setup.? And the major benefits are the access to amazing resources, interaction from a distance, and student enjoyment/interest."

?

Still the debate rages on about the need and desire for computers and other gadgets in the classroom. ?Are we cheating our children by not introducing them to technology as soon as possible in this modern world? ?Or should we back off and keep the technology to a minimum until kids have learned how to think critically and creatively without the guidance of the latest app? ?

?

What do you think?

Legal professional Affiliate marketing * The key in order to Legal ...

Add a comment

February 6th, 2012 by dan

It?s exceptional to make note of that we now have still many founded complaintant?s lawyers without defined Affiliate marketing finances. I am not conversing solo professionals below, fairly businesses using a few, four or maybe more attorneys. Maybe your own company dominates their market place because you landed a local tv set legitimate expert show, otherwise you possess do well as a result of seven determine circumstance testimonials and referrals from the community ? the reason why would certainly virtually any Lawyer seo n?t need to get more prospects online, the place that the come back on the advertising and marketing bucks could be more than virtually any additional purchase?

5 years back, an expert Site was level for your study course for any effective lawyer. Nowadays, an adult Website marketing program is often a ?must-have? no longer a new ?nice-to-have?.

Thus, how will you commence and also exactly what do your core mindset is? The answer to this relies about what you are trying to perform and the type of start up business sales opportunities that you?re trying to generate.

A nicely designed Internet site is commonly the first task for some firms. Design and style is more than looks. To expect precisely how favorable your online site is for you to catching qualified prospects and how well your posts displays the lookup site visitors you would like to generate.

The 2nd stage for most plaintiff?s firms is search engine marketing. You?ll find on-site factors (which includes tag words, keywords, distinct landing pages) and also off site aspects (which include index submissions, backlink building, writing and submitting articles, press announcements). Search engine optimisation has become really superior plus it will pay to do your research and speak to several vendors before you make a determination.

Because of the developing position associated with written content searching motor formulas, the subsequent consideration for law firms could be the a higher level inside or external means for you to invest in web content writing for the company. Obtaining Seo San diego professionals keep an eye on as well as enhance almost all written content created by your own firm can enlarge the value of these types of initiatives. In reality, this is a single vital location that a lot of attorneys ignore. These people improve his or her Web site, they have a agency participate in link building and so the law firm earnings to have interior employee up-date your site, with little if any respect for the impact on internet search engine acknowledgement. Therefore, Law firm Website marketing endeavours dwindle effective and a lot period will be thrown away, when outcomes has been attained with less resource purchase.

Some organizations could decide in which Pay per click marketing is a possible substitute particularly conditions. In a few dangerous tort or perhaps merchandise defect cases businesses need to behave speedily as well as Search engine optimization features too long of your increase serious amounts of just isn?t adequately predictable. Whilst Search engine marketing may work properly for the search term like ?medical malpractice legal professional Fresh York? it won?t soar regarding ?Hydroxycut lawsuit?, exactly where occasion is important and corporations are searhing for to succeed in a certain claimant target audience prior to levels of competition can.

No prison time for worker in Utah pesticide deaths (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY ? A federal judge has ordered no prison time for a former exterminator who pleaded guilty to the use of a pesticide that was linked to the 2010 deaths of two girls in Utah.

U.S. District Judge Dee Benson said Friday that Coleman Nocks had shown true remorse and sentenced him to three years on probation. Nocks had expected to serve six months in prison and six months of home confinement as part of a plea agreement.

Benson also sentenced Nocks' former employer, Bugman Pest and Lawn Inc., to a $3,000 fine and probation.

Bugman President Raymond Wilson and Nocks each pleaded guilty in October to one misdemeanor count of unlawful use of a registered pesticide.

The Toone family of Layton was sickened by pesticide fumes, and two children died.

The biology of politics: Liberals roll with the good, conservatives confront the bad

The biology of politics: Liberals roll with the good, conservatives confront the bad

Thursday, January 5, 2012

From cable TV news pundits to red-meat speeches in Iowa and New Hampshire, our nation's deep political stereotypes are on full display: Conservatives paint self-indulgent liberals as insufferably absent on urgent national issues, while liberals say fear-mongering conservatives are fixated on exaggerated dangers to the country.

A new study from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln suggests there are biological truths to such broad brushstrokes.

In a series of experiments, researchers closely monitored physiological reactions and eye movements of study participants when shown combinations of both pleasant and unpleasant images. Conservatives reacted more strongly to, fixated more quickly on, and looked longer at the unpleasant images; liberals had stronger reactions to and looked longer at the pleasant images compared with conservatives.

"It's been said that conservatives and liberals don't see things in the same way," said Mike Dodd, UNL assistant professor of psychology and the study's lead author. "These findings make that clear ? quite literally."

To gauge participants' physiological responses, they were shown a series of images on a screen. Electrodes measured subtle skin conductance changes, which indicated an emotional response. The cognitive data, meanwhile, was gathered by outfitting participants with eyetracking equipment that captured even the most subtle of eye movements while combinations of unpleasant and pleasant photos appeared on the screen.

While liberals' gazes tended to fall upon the pleasant images, such as a beach ball or a bunny rabbit, conservatives clearly focused on the negative images ? of an open wound, a crashed car or a dirty toilet, for example.

Consistent with the idea that conservatives seem to respond more to negative stimuli while liberals respond more to positive stimuli, conservatives also exhibited a stronger physiological response to images of Democratic politicians ? presumed to be a negative to them ? than they did on pictures of well-known Republicans. Liberals, on the other hand, had a stronger physiological response to the Democrats ? presumed to be a positive stimulus to them ? than they did to images of the Republicans.

By studying both physiological and cognitive aspects, the researchers established unique new insights into the growing notion that political leanings are at least partial products of our biology, UNL political scientist and study co-author Kevin Smith said.

Recent research on the subject has focused mostly on physiological reactions to negative stimuli. The new study's use of cognitive data regarding both positive and negative imagery adds to the understanding of how liberals and conservatives see and experience the world, Smith said.

UNL political scientist and co-author John Hibbing said the results might mean that those on the right are more attuned and attentive to aversive elements in life and are more naturally inclined to confront them. From an evolutionary standpoint, that makes sense, he said.

The results also are consistent with conservatives' support of policies to protect society from perceived external threats (support for increased defense spending or opposition to immigration) and internal ones as well (support for traditional values and being tough on crime), Hibbing said.

The researchers were careful to not make a value judgment on either political orientation. But they did note that their discovery provided an opportunity to recognize the relevance of deeper biological variables in politics and turn down political polarization.

Rather than believing those with opposite political views are uninformed or willfully obtuse, the authors said, political tolerance could be enhanced if it was widely understood that political differences are based in part on our physiological and cognitive differences.

"When conservatives say that liberals are out of it and just don't get it, from this standpoint, that's true," Hibbing said. "And when liberals say 'What are (conservatives) so frightened of? Is the world really that dangerous?' Given what each side sees, what they pay attention to, what they physiologically experience ? the answer is both sides are right."
