Body of Turkish ex-leader shows signs of poisoning: paper

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - An autopsy on the exhumed body late President Turgut Ozal, who led Turkey out of military rule in the 1980s, has revealed evidence of poisoning, a newspaper reported on Monday.

There had long been rumors Ozal, who died of heart failure in 1993 aged 65, was murdered by militants of the "deep state" - a shadowy nationalist strain within the Turkish establishment of the day. He had angered some with his efforts to end the Kurdish conflict and survived on assassination bid in 1988.

His body, dug up last month on the orders of prosecutors investigating suspicions of foul play in his death, contained the banned insecticide DDT and the related compound DDE at ten times the normal level, Today's Zaman cited sources from the state Forensic Medicine Institute (ATK) as saying.

"Ozal was most likely poisoned with four separate substances," the paper reported the sources as saying, also naming the toxic metal cadmium and the radioactive elements americium and polonium as substances found in Ozal's remains.

Forensic institute officials declined to comment.

Ozal, whose economic reforms easing the grip of the state on business helped shape modern Turkey, was in poor health. After undergoing a triple heart bypass operation in the United States in 1987, he kept up a grueling schedule and remained overweight until he died.

His moves to end a Kurdish insurgency and create a Turkic union with central Asian states have been cited as motives for would-be enemies in "deep state", in which security establishment figures and criminal elements colluded.

It was Turkey's military leaders who appointed him as a minister after a period of military rule following a 1980 coup.

He went on to dominate Turkish politics as prime minister from 1983 to 1989. Parliament then elected him president, but those close to him believe his reform efforts displeased some in the security establishment.

While prime minister, Ozal survived an assassination attempt by a right-wing gunman in 1988 when he was shot at a party congress, injuring a finger.

Turkish political history has been littered with military coups, alleged anti-government plots and extra-judicial killings. A court is currently trying hundreds of people suspected of links to a nationalist underground network known as "Ergenekon" accused of plotting to overthrow the government.

A media report at the start of November said Ozal's autopsy had revealed high levels of the pesticide strychnine, but the ATK subsequently denied the report.

The head of the ATK has said the institute aims to complete its work in December and that its report would be handed over to prosecutors.

The Tacoma Prostate Cancer Support Group provides a community of caring individuals who willingly give support and education to the recently diagnosed person and those with an on-going battle with the disease.? Information, books, and pamphlets on prostate cancer are available for free at the twice monthly meetings held in Tacoma.

Jack Hudspeth, support group facilitator, says that one extremely important aspect of the disease is to get tested early with a PSA test.? Mr. Kirk addressed the recent US Task Force Report on Prostate Cancer Screening whose recommendation is to eliminate the PSA test for most men saying it is not needed.? This same group recommended doing away with early mammograms for women.? Now the PSA test for men is under fire from the same group.

Willie Stewart, also a facilitator, is a former teacher and administrator with the Tacoma Public Schools.? He was instrumental in starting the Tacoma Prostate Cancer Support Group then known as Man To Man in 1990.? Stewart remembers vividly the day he was exercising at the YMCA when he was urged to get a new test called the PSA.? He decided to get tested which led to a diagnosis of prostate cancer.? Early detection and surgery saved his life.? As a man of African-American heritage, Stewart understands that men of his race are more prone to get prostate cancer than other races.? Stewart prides himself in attending community health fairs to get his message heard.

Bob Freeborn is a current facilitator and chairperson of the Tacoma Prostate Cancer Support Group Steering Committee.? India blames European Union for trying to derail ?Durban deal?

NEW DELHI: India has accused European Union of threatening to break the 'Durban deal' on climate change and linking the ratification of Kyoto Protocol to new conditions.

R R Rashmi, joint secretary (climate change) in the environment ministry and a senior negotiator, said, "To put it bluntly, the gain to EU by not ratifying the Kyoto Protocol is to keep the protocol obligations open and secondly, to link it to the process of negotiations under the Durban Platform (which is to decide a new post- 2020 global regime)."

A last-minute deal agreed between EU and the major developing countries and agreed upon by all others in 2011 at Durban permitted the establishment of a fresh process to finalize a new global deal by 2015. In return, the EU and other developed countries party to the Kyoto Protocol committed to extend its life beyond 2013. The new global deal to be implemented by 2020 is expected to ring fence the bigger developing economies into a higher level of commitment to reduce emission of greenhouse gases.

But the protocol can gain a legally-binding nature only if EU and other rich countries get its life extended through a formal amendment and then ratify the amended version. The first period of the protocol lapses on December 31, 2012.

Rashmi warned that the talks could fail if the developed countries did not formally ratify the protocol. The next round of UN climate talks starts at Doha on Nov 26.

Residents looking for a nighttime outdoor adventure are invited to bundle up, wait until dark and then join other like-minded night owls and a state park naturalist for a walk through the woods in one of several state parks offering Owl Prowls in November and December. Participating Owl Prowlers will spend 30 to 45 minutes walking through the woods, calling these magnificent creatures, while seeing if they can spot one on its perch or flying overhead.

After the hike, guests can enjoy sitting around a bonfire, making s?mores, chatting about owls and sharing nature stories. Park staff reminds participants to wear comfortable shoes, dress for the weather (events will take place rain or shine), and bring something to drink, a camp chair, a flashlight or miner?s light, and a great outdoor or nature story to share around the fire.

Pre-registration is not required and the programs are free of charge; however, a Recreation Passport is required for vehicles entering the state parks and recreation areas.

Zimbabwe GDP growth slows, elections linger

HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe expects growth of 5 percent in 2013 after a sharp slow down this year but a violent election campaign could dampen prospects for a sustained recovery of the fragile economy, Finance Minister Tendai Biti said on Thursday.

The southern African country is expected to hold general elections in 2013 but many fear supporters of long-serving President Robert Mugabe might use violence, which marred previous polls, to win the vote.

Mugabe has been in an uneasy coalition with long-time rival Morgan Tsvangirai, now prime minister, after a disputed election in 2008.

Biti said in a budget presentation to parliament that Zimbabwe's growth prospects in the coming year were based on a normal rainy season to boost agriculture and firming commodity prices for its minerals.

"The biggest risk in 2013 remains that one of a violent and contested election," said Biti, a senior figure from Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change party.

Biti said the economy was now expected to grow 4.4 percent this year, less than half the 9.3 percent expansion recorded last year, due to a decline in agricultural output

Inflation, which quickened to 3.38 percent in October, is expected to remain below 5 percent in 2012.

Economic growth in a country once seen as one of Africa's most promising rebounded to near-double digits over the last couple of years following a decade-long recession.

An anonymous email sent in May set off an elaborate chain of events that led to the downfall of former CIA Director David Petraeus, ensnared the top Afghan war chief and saw the Pentagon order a review of ethics training for senior officers. Lawmakers are demanding answers about who knew what and when. Here's a timeline of the scandal, according to officials involved in the investigation:

Spring 2006 ? Paula Broadwell meets Petraeus at Harvard University, where she is a graduate student. Petraeus is a lieutenant general working on a counterinsurgency manual and is invited to speak about his experiences in Iraq.

January 2007 ? The Senate confirms Petraeus as the commanding general for U.S. troops in Iraq.

2008 ? Broadwell starts studying Petraeus' leadership. On a visit to Washington, Petraeus invites Broadwell to join him and his team for a run along the Potomac River.

October 2008 ? Petraeus is named commander of U.S. Central Command, based at MacDill Air Force Base near Tampa, Fla., where socialite Jill Kelley and her husband attend events alongside the area's military elite.

June 30, 2010 ? The Senate confirms Petraeus as the new commander for war in Afghanistan. Over the next year, Broadwell expands her research of Petraeus into an authorized biography. She makes multiple trips to Afghanistan and is given unprecedented access to Petraeus and his commanders.

Sept. 6, 2011 ? Petraeus is sworn in as CIA director with his wife, Holly, by his side. Broadwell keeps in contact with Petraeus and is later invited to his office for events, including a meeting with actress Angelina Jolie.

Fall 2011 ? Tampa socialite Jill Kelley attends an FBI "Citizens' Academy" in Florida, where Frederick W. Humphries, a veteran FBI counterterrorism investigator, gives a lecture.

November 2011 ? Petraeus begins an extramarital affair with Broadwell, according to retired Army Col. Steve Boylan.

January 2012 ? Broadwell's biography, "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," is released. In an interview with her hometown paper, the Bismarck Tribune, Broadwell describes Petraeus as an inspirational figure who always takes care of his subordinates.

May 2012 ? An anonymous email, ultimately traced to Broadwell, is sent to Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, warning him to stay away from Kelley, the Florida socialite. The email comes from the pseudonym "Kelleypatrol," and notes Allen's plans to see Kelley in Washington the following week. Confused about how anyone else would know about his personal plans, Allen forwards it to Kelley to see whether she's playing a prank on him.

Early June 2012 ? Kelley starts receiving the first of several emails from various email accounts claiming she's up to no good. One email mentions Petraeus and an upcoming social event in Washington.

June 2012 ? Kelley triggers an FBI investigation by showing the emails to Humphries, the FBI agent, who is concerned that the sender of the emails is tracking the movements of Allen and Petraeus.

July 2012 ? The affair between Petraeus and Broadwell ends, according to Petraeus' friend Boylan. The anonymous emails to Kelley stop. The FBI designates the case a sensitive investigative matter, a designation that requires that FBI headquarters and Justice Department officials to be notified within 30 days.

August 2012 ? Humphries tells Kelley he's been removed from the case and complains that the FBI is moving too slowly. Meanwhile, another FBI agent involved in the investigations tells Kelley the FBI has traced the emails to Broadwell, whom Kelley has never met.

Summer 2012 ? Emails between Petraeus and Broadwell lead agents to believe the two are having an affair. FBI Director Robert Mueller is notified. At some point during the investigation, the FBI interviews Petraeus and Broadwell.

Late Summer 2012 ? Attorney General Eric Holder is notified. By this time, the FBI has long since concluded there was no national security breach, but continues investigating whether Petraeus had any role in the harassing emails sent to Kelley.

Oct. 27 ? Humphries calls House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and says he's worried the FBI isn't aggressively pursuing a possible security breach. Word of Humphries concerns first reaches Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Wash., who arranges for Humphries to speak with Cantor.

The week of Oct. 29 ? Petraeus and Broadwell are both interviewed for a second time by the FBI. By this point, both have acknowledged the affair to the FBI.

Oct. 31 ? Cantor's chief of staff calls the FBI chief of staff to inform him of the tip. Cantor is assured soon after that the FBI is on top of any possible vulnerability.

Tuesday, Nov. 6 ? As Americans cast their ballots on Election Day, the Justice Department informs Director of National Intelligence James Clapper of the investigation. Clapper calls Petraeus and urges him to resign.

Wednesday, Nov. 7 ? The White House is first notified about the affair involving Petraeus. The retired general turns 60.

Thursday, Nov. 8 ? President Barack Obama, having returned from Chicago, is told of the affair. Petraeus meets with Obama at the White House and asks to resign.

Friday, Nov. 9 ? Obama accepts Petraeus' resignation. News of the resignation breaks before Congress is briefed. Broadwell's husband emails guests to cancel her 40th birthday party, scheduled for that weekend. By the evening, Broadwell has been publicly identified.

Sunday, Nov. 11 ? Lawmakers complain in televised interviews that the FBI didn't alert them sooner to the investigation. Kelley's identity is revealed by The Associated Press, and she issues a statement asking for privacy.

Monday, Nov. 12 ? The FBI searches Broadwell's house in Charlotte, N.C., with her consent. As she has told them to expect, the agents find classified documents there. The Pentagon orders an investigation into the Allen matter.

Tuesday, Nov. 13 ? Pentagon reveals that Allen is under internal investigation for thousands of "inappropriate communications" with Kelley over a two-year period, and puts on hold his nomination to be the next commander of U.S. European Command and the commander of NATO forces in Europe. Macdill Air Force Base revokes Kelley's access pass.

Wednesday, Nov. 14 ? President Barack Obama says he has seen no evidence that national security was threatened by the scandal. FBI Director Robert Mueller and Acting CIA Director Michael Morell meet privately with top lawmakers on intelligence committees. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, traveling abroad, says he's confident Allen can continue to lead. Broadwell's security clearance is suspended.

Thursday, Nov. 15 ? Citing a string of ethical lapses by senior military officers, Panetta orders a review of ethics training. The CIA opens an "exploratory" investigation into Petraeus' general conduct. Petraeus says in a CNN interview that he never gave classified information to Broadwell. Questioning continues on Capitol Hill, with Petraeus set to testify Friday about Libya before the House Intelligence Committee.
